YOUTH CENTERS
The core of the project is to create multifunctional youth centres. These centres would serve as schools in the morning, youth clubs (such as oratories) in the afternoon and more generally as community centres for the area. They would be managed by an educator. The project has been launched in Colombia and consists of:
- building new community centres in remote villages to serve as meeting places for the community and to house the teachers who will give lessons there, as well as the centre's reference educator;
- using existing schools in the area as afternoon youth centres.
These are the two main objectives. Thanks to our team's many years of experience in education and organisation, we are training new educators on site to become points of reference. During the summer, we will bring our summer camp to three local schools (Coredi-Marinilla, Coredi-Rionegro, Coredi-El Peñol) with our team to provide hands-on training for animators and educators.
A YOUTH CENTER
- Provides basic education to more than 200 children,
- Welcomes hundreds of children and young people every afternoon to promote socialisation,
- Helps more than 100 families,
- Promotes personal growth,
- Takes children born on the streets off the streets,
- Teaches young people a job.
WHERE ARE WE AT
At the end of the Italian summer camps in July 2024, we took nine young people from Milan to Colombia. After a brief tour of the area and an overview of the country's history, the young people spent a week working at the recently established Coredi Marinilla, Coredi Rionegro, Coredi El Peñol camps. Every day at a different youth center, they worked alongside local youth workers to organise games, activities and workshops to bring joy and happiness to the children.
There was an added surprise when the Bishop of the Diocese of Sonson-Rionegro, Monsignor Fidel, came to visit us with about twenty assistant priests, keen to understand the purpose of an oratory and why it was worth devoting time to. Impressed by the young people's accounts, he decided to establish oratories throughout his diocese as soon as possible. Two have already opened: Oratorio La Piñuela in Cocorná and Oratorio La Presentación in Rionegro. To conclude this experience, the young people left with the animators of the Coredi Marinilla oratory for the mission in the village of Santa Ana Granada.
In recent months, we have continued to run three existing summer camps in Milan, Italy.
In addition six Colombian teenagers came to Milan in June to experience the summer oratory. There, they learnt how to organise and manage an oratory and gained valuable life experience. They were hosted by local families, which gave them the opportunity to share their culture and compare it with others. They also visited Rome, Florence and Como, learning about the history of Italy. All of this was done to enrich their experience and open their eyes to a topic that is very close to our hearts and theirs alike: the education of young children.
In recent months, we have also networked with various associations and organisations in Italy, Colombia and Brazil, including Oratorio Gentilino, Oratorio LaRiva, Oratorio San Cipriano, ASD Gentilino, ASD Juvenilia, Organisation Coredi, the Diocese of Sonson-Rionegro, Amigos del Mar and Asociación Savipa. Through these collaborations, Sendas is suppprting the management of the six oratories founded by Savipa in the Brazilian favelas of Caxias do Sul in the Rio Grande do Sul region: São Vicente, Canyon, Belo Horizonte, Vale Verde, Diamantino, Centenário) founded by Savipa in the Brazilian favelas of the city of Caxias do Sul, in the Rio Grande do Sul region.
